In Iraq, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis and his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein agreed to work together to tackle the irregular migrant crisis.

“Iraq has paid serious attention to the situation at the Lithuanian state border. In addition, we have been given a promise to launch an investigation into a possible criminal network organised by Belarus in Iraq, which exploits the people of Iraq, selling them trips to the European Union, although they do not travel farther than a migrant camp. We have agreed on political principles of cooperation. Technical delegations will discuss concrete measures in more detail. We have also agreed on their meeting in the near future," said the Foreign Minister.

In the near future, a delegation of Lithuanian experts will visit Iraq, while Iraqi experts will make a return visit to Lithuania.

According to Landsbergis, he has heard from his Iraqi counterpart that the Government of Iraq is interested to prevent its citizens from participating in the criminal human smuggling network.
