As we celebrate M. K. Čiurlionis 150th anniversary, The Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania in Los Angeles invites you to take a closer look at Lithuanian’s most renowned artist in the exhibition “Beyond the Canvas: Čiurlionis 150”.

Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis (1875–1911) was a Lithuanian painter, composer, and cultural visionary. Widely regarded as one of Lithuania’s greatest artists, he was a pioneer of abstract and symbolic art in Europe. Over the course of his brief but prolific life, M. K. Čiurlionis created more than 300 musical compositions and approximately 300 visual artworks—many of which explore themes of music, mythology, nature, and the cosmos. M. K . Čiurlionis’ work—marked by a unique fusion of sound and image—remains central to Lithuanian national identity.

Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis continues to inspire artists around the world to this day. To celebrate the 150th anniversary of his birth, first-year students of the Vilnius Academy of Arts, together with their professor Jolanta Talaikytė, created an exhibition titled Čiurlionis’ Beloved Ones. The exhibition offers a quiet encounter with the women who loved Čiurlionis — not through his most famous paintings or musical masterpieces, but through those who stood beside him: loving, believing, and protecting. It also features several works by first-year students, inspired by Čiurlionis’ famous quotes.

Throughout the week, you will be able to explore the exhibition of M. K. Čiurlionis’ art reproductions (https://ciurlionis.eu/en/gallery/painting)  and the exhibition  Čiurlionis’ Beloved Ones as well experience the 25-minute virtual reality movie Trails of Angels (registration required: https://18thstreet.org/.../beyond-the-canvas-ciurlionis-150/), which introduces M. K. Čiurlionis’ paintings, blending visual imagery with his music and interpretations by composers (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmTAGcm-Lpk). It is a unique celebration of the work by the pioneering Lithuanian artist and composer.
