Concert "Celebrating the Heritage of Lithuanian Jewish (Litvak) Music" will be held in Santa Monica

The Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania cordially invites you to enjoy an evening of Litvak music featuring the musical program AEROGRAM on Thursday, November 21st, 6:30 PM. It will mark the upcoming 2020 as the Year of the Vilna Gaon and the History of the Lithuanian Jews. A short video and stories will provide a glimpse into daily life in Vilna – “Jerusalem of the North”.

In the early 1300s, Grand Duke Gediminas invited European Jews into expanding Grand Duchy of Lithuania. For over 600 years the Litvaks remained one of the most important pillars for cultural development in Lithuania and neighboring countries until the Holocaust tragically wiped out 95% of the Jews living in Lithuania. However, the descendants of Litvaks still play strong leading roles in society to this day.

One of the most remarkable contributions that the Lithuanian Jews have made was to World Musical Culture. Four young prominent Lithuanians musicians – cellist Gleb Pyšniak, violinist Darius Dikšaitis, pianist Robertas Lozinskis and vibraphonist Marius Šinkūnas, team up to connect past and present by following the footprints of the Litvak musical heritage.

The programme will include a collection of jewels of Litvak music by Aaron Copland, Leopold Godowsky, George Gershwin, Joseph Achron, Jascha Heifetz, Vyacheslav Ganelin, Anatolijus Šenderovas, covering over a hundred years of inspiration, creative energy and musical blessing.
