Consul General Laima Jurevičienė visited Santa Barbara

On November 16th, the Consul General of the Republic of Lithuania in Los Angeles Laima Jurevičienė together with the Honorary Consul of Lithuania in Southern California Daiva Čekanauskas Navarrette visited the city of Santa Barbara in California.

During the visit, the Consul General toured the archives of Marija Gimbutas at the Opus Archives and Research Center, where she met with Jennifer Maxon, director of archives, and Devon Deimler, curator of the exhibition ‘Marija Gimbutas: Archeomythology of a Goddess’.

During the meeting the UNESCO-marked commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Marija Gimbutas’ birth in Lithuania and other countries, the issues of preserving and researching Marija Gimbutas’ scientific heritage as well as possible cooperation between the U.S. and Lithuanian scientists in this field were discussed.

Mrs. Jurevičienė also visited the library of Joseph Campbell and Marija Gimbutas on the Lambert Road campus of the Pacifica Graduate Institute, which houses Mrs. Gimbutas’ collection of 1,600 books on religion, anthropology, linguistics, mythology, folklore, and art.

At the University of California, Santa Barbara, the Consul General met with Lithuanian prof. Skirmantas Janušonis and dr. Vėjas Skripkus. The conversation focused on the possibilities of cooperation between the Lithuanian and the U.S. researchers.

Also, during the visit Mrs. Jurevičienė visited the Paperback Alley bookstore, and met with its owner Rūta Safranavičius who invites everyone coming to Santa Barbara to visit her bookstore with long traditions.
