On 16 February Los Angeles will congratulate Lithuania with Centennial Celebration
On February 16, 2018, Los Angeles International Airport will congratulate Lithuania with a centennial and for the first time will be lit in the colors of Lithuania's flag. Visitors and guests of one of the busiest airports in the world will see LAX Gateway Pylons glowing in yellow, green and red from the sunset of February 16 until the sunrise of February 17. "City of Los Angeles is joining the celebration of the restored and modern Lithuania. It is both an important simbolical gesture and a nice gift for approxmatelly 10.000 Lithuanians who live here" - says Darius Gaidys, Consul General in Los Angeles.
Created in 2000, "LAX Gateway Pylons" art installation consists of 30-meter (100-foot) tall metal and glass towers, positioned around the main entrance to Los Angeles International Airport. After the sunset, these towers are illuminated by LED diodes and are visible from the air, and they have already become a symbol of the city. Authors of the project are Paul Tzanetopoulos, Ted Tokio Tanaka Architects, Color Kinetics LEDs. Los Angeles International Airport is one of the largest and busiest in the world, the second largest in the United States, and serves around 70-80 million passengers per year, around 190-220 thousand travellers per day.
In 2018, Consulate General of the Republic of Lithuania in Los Angeles will organize events in U.S. West Coast, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Lithuania's Independence, in cooperation with Lithuanian communities and non-governmental organizations. Program of the events includes meetings and lectures about Lithuania's history, art exhibitions, concerts and other cultural events.
